Abstract

At present stage of modernization of the national educational system, the search for effective ways to implement the content of education, aimed at formation of a competent school graduate, is important. Achievement of results in this direction is possible under conditions of competent approach to organizing the process of teaching students, which, in turn, leads to the search for new and rethinking of existing approaches to studying geography in senior grades of school. All this allows us to determine the factors that influence the formation of students’ subject competencies in process of studying geography in school: the use of tasks of creative and practical orientation, the development of critical thinking, the use of geographic informational systems (GIS). This, in turn, imposes certain requirements for a modern teacher in the context of implementation of competent approach in process of teaching and learning geography in general education establishments, such as: constant self-development, raising own professional level, creative approach to teaching subject, ability to design, the competent approach to the presentation of subject content, competency-oriented training. The article highlights the issues of peculiarities of formation of basic and subject competencies of senior school students of comprehensive school during geography learning process. Several results of monitoring research on the specifics of teaching geography in general educational establishments of Putivl and Trostyanets districts of Sumy region are shown. The formation of basic and subject competencies in the 10th grade students, who took part in monitoring research, was analyzed. The components that affect the formation of subject competencies of school students during geography learning process are defined.
