Abstract
The article highlights the history of the formation and the development of the first Ukrainian public research institution in the area of education, namely, the Institute of of Pedagogy (since 2010, the Institute of Pedagogy of the NAES of Ukraine). The conditions for its foundation in 1926, the ideologically predetermined difficulties in functioning in 1930–1950 were considered. The major milestones of the Institute progress, the research areas of the scholars were described. The most significant results of the work performed in 90-s were reflected. The input of the Institute scholars to the development of concepts, curricula, textbooks and books for the different types of secondary schools in the development of theoretical and methodological foundations of children’s education was outlined.
