Abstract
The article substantiates the importance of the development of the mathematical competence of the linguistic personality. It is determined by the need to organize and process information, to correctly interpret graphic data, logically formulate ideas, and construct grammatically appropriate statements in English. The authors consider thinking, linguistic feeling, communicative tolerance, and cognitive flexibility the key psycholinguistic foundations of the development of the mathematical competence of the linguistic personality. These psycholinguistic conditions enable the awareness of the mental states of the author of the text, encoded in oral or written form, and the study of the influence of mental processes on the individual’s speech activity. The paper states that in the European and Ukrainian legislative bases, the development of mathematical competence involves the combination of knowledge in mathematics, technology, humanities, and natural and social sciences. This is due to the necessity to realize the regularities of the functioning of reality phenomena and processes and their mutual influence, to solve practical tasks in various areas, and to create innovative products. It is found that thinking is an important psycholinguistic factor in the development of mathematical competence, since the relations between facts, phenomena, and processes of reality are reflected within English-language syntactic constructions. In turn, mastery of linguistic feeling enables intuitively correct arrangement of words in a sentence, coordination of parts of speech, appropriate choice of declension, and use of suitable verb tense forms in the absence of knowledge about the relevant rules. Communicative tolerance is considered to influence the establishment of a relationship of trust between the teacher and the learner during the acquisition of English grammar. It is an important indicator
of mental health, emotional balance, and the containment of verbal aggression or disloyalty to statements grammatically framed in a certain way. It is revealed that owing to cognitive flexibility, the linguistic personality is able to switch attention from one topic to another and search for alternative ways of solving complex grammatical problems. Besides, it is capable of reactive processing of
the interlocutor’s oral and written messages and selecting the necessary syntactic means of speech expression.
