Abstract

Abstract. The article presents the results of a theoretical synthesis and an empirical investigation of self-regulation and self-organization as resources underpinning learning motivation among higher education students in a digital environment. The relevance of the study is determined by the increasing autonomy of students in distance and blended learning, which places greater demands on their ability to set goals independently, plan their activities, monitor task completion, and consciously manage their digital engagement. The study aimed to identify the characteristics of learning motivation, self-regulation, self-organization, and problematic Internet use; establish the nature of the relationships among these variables; and substantiate pedagogical guidelines for supporting students’ motivation. The sample comprised 58 higher education students aged 18–25 years. The research employed a diagnostic measure of learning motivation, questionnaires assessing behavioral self-regulation and activity self-organization, and a scale of problematic Internet use. Statistical analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. The findings revealed that motives related to professional development and knowledge acquisition predominated over a formal orientation toward obtaining a degree. The overall level of learning motivation was positively correlated with self-organization (rₛ = 0.67; p ≤ 0.01) and self-regulation (rₛ = 0.61; p ≤ 0.01), whereas a negative relationship was identified between learning motivation and problematic Internet use (rₛ = -0.48; p ≤ 0.01). The substantive motives of knowledge acquisition and professional development also demonstrated statistically significant positive associations with regulatory and organizational resources, while the motive of obtaining a degree was not significantly related to them. Pedagogical guidelines were substantiated, including professionally relevant learning content, the development of goal-setting, planning, self-monitoring, and reflection skills, the coherent structuring of digital interaction, formative assessment, and adherence to the principles of digital hygiene. It is concluded that self-regulation and self-organization are primarily associated with substantive forms of learning motivation and may therefore be regarded as important resources for sustaining it within a digital educational environment.
