The research on theoretical and practical foundations of the development of associate medical and pharmaceutical education in Ukraine (XX – the beginning of XXI century) is based on the establishing of periodization of the development of associate medical and pharmaceutical education and the identification of the specifies of vocational education of medical workers in Ukraine in every historical period. The making of objective inferences, source criticism and consideration of sociocultural, geopolitical and economic factors contributed to the processing of accumulated information. During the implementation of educational reforms in Ukraine, the way of redefining educational laws and the need of identifying a new strategy of higher education development becomes relevant. The necessity of thorough analysis, generalization and creative use of acquired historical experience is constantly growing.
In the context of the research, we have established our own periodization of theoretical and practical foundations of the development of associate medical and pharmaceutical education. We have divided them into four periods. The division is based on changes, which occurred in the country in a particular period, e.g., historical, sociopolitical, socioeconomic reforms on education. They influenced the development of theoretical and practical foundations of vocational training: 1) the first period (the beginning of XX century – 1920’s-1930’s): the start of the formation of medical and pharmaceutical educational system as distinctive fields during national liberation movement and foundation of the Soviet Union; 2) the second period (1931-1970): the reforming of the network of medical and pharmaceutical secondary and higher educational establishments; the improvement of the content and teaching methodologies; 3) the third period (1971-2000): the modernization of educational system; the development of a new legal and regulatory basis of education; the transition to multi-level system of training specialists; 4) the fourth period (the beginning of XXI century – 2001-2020): the restructuring of the health care system, European integration, Ukraine’s membership in Bologna process; the standardization of education; the introduction of innovative teaching technologies.
