Abstract
The article analyzes the monitoring study of the skills of the comprehensive secondary school students to read and understand the read text which has been conducted in Ukraine since 2005. In particularly, the national monitoring research of the quality of the 4th grade students’ achievements in reading, Ukrainian language, mathematics and natural science (2005), study on the abilities and skills to read and comprehend a text by the pupils of the 4 grades of educational institutions in Kyiv (2007), research on the formation of the reading literacy of the pupils of the 7th grade of the educational institutions in Kyiv (2009), monitoring the level of formation of the abilities and skills of the pupils of the 4th grades of comprehensive educational institutions in Ukrainian language and mathematics in the context of their readiness to learn in primary school (2009), a test of general academic competence (2010–2012), monitoring the quality of secondary education among all students of the 5th and 10th grades of secondary schools (2013) were featured. The purpose of these monitoring studies is revealed; some brief information on the basic skills that were tested while the monitoring was being conducted was presented, as well their brief results were provided. The ways of Ukraine’s participation in the international research on the education quality education PISA were suggested. It was found out that the problem of reading skills are relevant in teaching and educational process at school and cover all subjects. It is concluded that in any CEI, at all lessons, it is necessary to form students’ ability to read and understand the read text, and at the national level, it is noteworthy to conduct a study on reading skills.
