Abstract

Modern society demands from school to train graduates able to solve independently vital tasks, to be socially active, to understand social-economic events, to think critically, to use their knowledge in practice in solving specific life problems. Competency approach in education is the response to time requirements. It demands the ability of students to adapt quickly and flexibly to new requirements, apply their knowledge in solving non-standard situations, and from teachers – the ability to organize properly students’ learning activities and effectively manage it. With this in mind, competent training and teaching are becoming more and more important, hence, competent approach to teaching subjects, since, acquired in the process of learning competencies are indicators, that determine the readiness of graduate student for further personal development and active participation in life of society. The article deals with the specifics of implementation of competence approach in the process of teaching geography in general educational establishments. Several results of monitoring research on the specifics of teaching geography in general educational establishments of Putivl and Trostyanets districts of Sumy region are shown. The conditions of effective implementation of competence approach in the process of teaching geography by school teacher are analyzed.
