Abstract
The paper presents research on the problem of the formation of mathematical competence as a key competence in foreign language teaching. The importance of developing logical, mathematical and critical thinking, solving educational and communicative problems and logical tasks, and using mathematical modelling to form the specified competence and comprehensive personality development is emphasized. The need to develop an effective diagnostic toolkit for the specified competence of 8th-grade students in the process of learning the verb of the English language is substantiated. By the components of mathematical competence (motivational-valuable, cognitive, activity-communicative, and evaluative-reflexive) and instructional and methodological recommendations for assessing the results of students’ educational activities, the following levels are distinguished (initial, basic, sufficient and high); criteria for the formation of the specified competence: activating (a system of motives, values, which encourage eighth-graders to use mathematical competence when studying the verb of the English language), cognitive (covers a system of knowledge of mathematical methods, language, formats), procedural (ability and skills to use the achievements of the mathematical field to study grammar, solve educational and communicative tasks), analytical (ability and readiness for reflection, self-analysis). A system of indicators of the formation of the studied competence has been determined by the new assessment requirements for the 2024–2025 academic year, which provide for the consideration of groups of results (perceiving oral information, interacting and expressing oneself orally, perceiving written texts, interacting and expressing oneself in writing). These indicators include levels of formation of the system of values and motives to apply mathematical competence when studying the English verb, in composing written and oral justifications; knowledge, ability and willingness to operate information in different formats; mathematical, logical and critical thinking and utilizing it while learning to solve communicative and real-life problems.
